The Silver Jubilee

7 June 1977 marked 25 years since the coronation of Elizabeth II - her silver Jubilee. There were celebrations all across the country: street parties, games, parades, bunting galore.

In Putney Vale, nestled between Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park, the residents held an costume party, featuring knights, horses, oxo cubes, and three hand-made Womble costumes that were so impressive that, after the celebrations were over, the Residents Association kept the womble costumes and rented them out to raise money.

The residents also painted the kerbs of all their roads red, white and blue - without checking with the council, who weren't impressed when they found out...
